The Waterfront Trail is 450km of gorgeous designated trail on the shore of Lake Ontario. I was fortunate enough to be able to photograph this couple on a section of it just outside the Waterfront Hotel in Burlington, Ontario. I was very drawn to the old metal chains and cement posts that guard pedestrians from falling into the water. They created a great nautical sense for such a lovely portrait along the waterfront. The sun was high in the sky so I knew I would need to overpower it with my strobe, but it also allowed me to get the beautiful blue sky and fluffy clouds in the background.
I filled the negative space of my composition with the metal chains and exposed for the sky. By placing the wedding couple on the right side of the frame I created a sense of drama. I then added to that by using the off camera strobe to brightly illuminate the bride and groom to match the hard light being cast by the sun. The dark colours of the cement posts and metal chains created nice contrast against the blue sky and water, but it also cozily framed in the couple on the right side of the composition without making them feel squished in the frame.
